At BIA Innovator Campus, we exist to ignite the future of Ireland’s food and drink industry. Backed by a highly skilled, industry-seasoned team and powered by world-class, purpose-built food production facilities, we are on a mission to accelerate the growth, innovation, and global ambition of food and beverage SMEs across Ireland.

Derek Dunwoody

General Manager

Derek Dunwoody has over 30 years’ experience across various sectors within the food industry, both domestically and internationally, having a strong food science and commercial/business development background. Having completed the Leader for Growth Programme (Irish Management Institute) and Go-Global 4 Growth Programme( DCU)  and worked for several Food Companies , Derek brings with him both strong leadership and strategic growth experience .His skillset has evolved through a multi-disciplinary of functional roles across several companies both within Ireland and abroad, encompassing Technical, R&D, Procurement, Marketing (including Brand Development), Finance (including Equity investment), GM site management, & Grant /Investment experience. The companies he has worked for range in scale and include Kepak,  Glenhaven Foods, Webbs Country Foods( UK-Avara Foods Ltd), Northern Foods ( Green Isle), Liffey Meats, Galmere Fresh Foods &  AllinAll Ingredients).

Anita Furey

Food Technologist

Anita has over 20 year’s professional scientific experience in water, environmental and food science. Anita has a PhD in Food Science & Nutrition; a first class honours bachelor’s degree in Business in Culinary Arts Management; an M.Sc in Groundwater Resources; a post graduate diploma in Environmental Science; and a primary B.Sc in Natural Science (Hons).  Anita has worked as a researcher in food science for both the Culinary Arts Department at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in Galway City, and Science Department at ATU, Donegal. Anita has also worked with many Irish food companies in new food product development, shelf-life analysis, physical and chemical analysis, consumer acceptance testing, and food safety.

Colm Foley

Food Innovation Manager

Colm Foley joined BIA in 2021 as our in-house food technologist. While working full time on the BIA Innovator Campus, Colm is a vital link to the services, resources and knowledge base within Teagasc. Colm holds a higher diploma in Food Science and Technology, an M.Sc in Food & Wine Management, and a Bachelor of Business in Culinary Arts. Through his considerable years’ experience in the food industry with Kinsale Bay Food Company and Filliére Charcuteries (France), Colm has gained extensive experience in food manufacturing and processing, recipe formulation, new product development, food safety, food safety management systems, food standards auditing, HACCP, process flow, fit out consulting, and lean manufacturing principles.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Health Science, having graduated from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2020. My academic journey culminated with the presentation of my final year project findings at the 2020 Health Promotion Conference, showcasing my dedication and expertise in the field. During my studies, I also held a managerial position at a popular Irish fast-food restaurant. This role honed my team leadership and customer service skills, providing me with valuable hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. More recently, I have been part of the dynamic and fast-paced Quality and Technical Department at one of Ireland’s largest pork processing plants for over three years. In this role, I gained extensive experience in maintaining and enhancing food quality standards. Additionally, I qualified with a distinction in Food Standards Auditing, further solidifying my expertise in the field.

    A full-time public representative, farmer, and a member of the IFA, Peter has decades of experience in rural development and is a Director of Athenry Community Council Trust Ltd, Enterprising Athenry Area Development Company Ltd, Athenry & District.

    Company Secretary

    20 years financial leadership experience as Managing Director of Loughlin & Company, an Accounting and Auditing Practice.

  • John Daly

    Director

    Food and logistics entrepreneur and investor, John is the owner of Ireland Food, involved in the sales, marketing and distribution of fresh food and live sciences, creating a brand of Functional Health Drinks based on sea plants. John holds an Executive MBA.

  • Alan Farrell

    Director

    Alan now heads the physical development directorate of Clare County Council and was previously acting Director of Services for Economic Development with Galway County Council.

    Served as Director of Further Education and Training at Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board. She holds a master’s in education and a Masters in Rural Development.

    Former Chief Executive of Louth and Galway County Councils, Former Member of The Arts Council and National Oversight & Audit Commission for Local Government. Current Chairperson of the Heritage Council.

  • Gus McCarthy

    Director

    Gus is a professional planner with a master’s degree in planning from UCD and 40 years of experience in both the public and private sectors and a member of the Irish Planning Institute. He is a Director of MKO Planning and Environmental Consultants, a practice which over 150 staff.

    Liam is Director of Services – Economic Development & Planning with Galway County Council with responsibility for Economic Development, Local Enterprise Office, Master Planning & Forward Planning, Town Regeneration, and Atlantic Economic Corridor. He holds a Masters in Local Government, Management, Finance and Policy and an MA in Community Development

Galway County Council and Teagasc have been instrumental in the creation and success of the BIA Innovator Campus, bringing visionary leadership, strategic funding, and deep expertise to strengthen Galway’s rural and regional economy. Together with founding partners including GRETB, LEO Galway, Western Development Commission, SCCUL Enterprises CLG, and Athenry Community Council, they identified the need for a dedicated Food Innovation Hub through a detailed feasibility study, leading to the development of the Campus at the Teagasc Mellows Campus in Athenry. By securing Enterprise Ireland support and aligning with local and national development goals, Galway County Council and Teagasc ensured the delivery of a state-of-the-art facility tailored to the needs of food start-ups and SMEs. Their commitment to collaboration, policy alignment, and enterprise development has positioned BIA Innovator Campus as a thriving national hub with growing international reach
